Skin Basics

It’s what’s inside that counts!
Your face is simply a mask that bears witness to the life you’ve led. Because looking good is a direct result of how you feel, it’s important to adopt a skin regimen that supports the skin and keeps it healthy, smooth and supple.

Functions
To serve and protect…the skin performs two primary functions:

Physiological functions
The skin serves as our very own suit of armor. It defends us against harsh, abrasive climates and environmental pollutants, and it locks in the vital moisture we need for good health. Harsh ultraviolet light, temperature fluctuations, bacteria and chemical irritants all wage a daily war on the skin, wearing away at its natural defenses.

UV light, ever present in daylight even on cloudy days, is thought to be responsible for approximately 80% of the aging of the skin. The harmful light releases free radicals—unstable molecules that destroy skin’s structure from within, breaking down the skin’s own defense mechanisms. This breakdown emphasizes the importance of building the skin from inside the body.

Social functions
Our skin serves an all too important societal function: It is the canvas by which others see us—our connection to the world. How we feel about our appearance has much to do with the quality of our skin. Think back to those adolescent days in high school and remember the embarrassment brought by a blemish. Years later, we react with the same startled despair at the notice of the first fine line. We struggle with dryness, sagging skin and dark under-eye circles while longing for the smooth, radiant skin of youth. The emotional response that results when we don’t feel happy with the way our skin looks and feels should further influence the necessity for proper care of the skin.

Structure
Get Under Your Skin
The skin is composed of multiple layers. The epidermis, only 0.1mm thick, is the outermost layer. The dermis, the layer beneath the epidermis, acts as the skin’s support system and provides the skin’s critical foundation. Imedeen™ works at the dermal layer, strengthening the skin’s foundation.

Collagen, elastin fibers and specific polysaccharides comprise the skin and provide firmness, flexibility, elasticity and moisture-binding capabilities. Topical creams and lotions can benefit the skin at only the epidermis level. To see significant change in the skin, the dermis must be influenced—and this can only happen from within.

Aging
Visible signs of aging are the symptoms of changes that have occurred below the skin’s surface as a result of harmful external influences. Among skin’s enemies are free radicals, the result of UV light exposure. They attack and break down the skin’s structure—the collagen, elastin fibers and polysaccharides. The product of this degradation are fine lines and wrinkles, dry skin and uneven skin tone, to name a few. Other factors that contribute to the skin’s deterioration are outlined below.

Sun
Approximately 80% of visible skin aging is the effect of UV light exposure. This means that sun/daylight has more effect on your skin than your body’s natural aging process does.

Genetic Aging Including Hormonal Aging
During the first five years after menopause, the skin loses 30% of its supportive collagen fibers. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and the signs of skin aging accelerate. The skin becomes less capable of storing moisture, becomes drier and “looser,” wrinkles deepen and become more pronounced. The skin also becomes more prone to damage caused by free radicals as the cell renewal process slows down.

Pollution
Airborne pollutants such as dirt and dust—found abundantly in many environments, especially those densely populated or industrialized areas—are harmful to the skin.

Air-conditioning
Dry, air-conditioned or centrally-heated interiors dehydrate the skin, leaving the epidermis dry, flaky and vulnerable. This dehydration damages the skin’s barrier function and enables an increased evaporation of dermal moisture.

Sleep
Sleep deprivation leads to a lack-luster complexion, and many times dark, puffy under-eye circles. Lack of sleep leads to skin that is prone to premature lines and wrinkles.

Stress
Our emotions can literally show on our faces. Anxiety and anger have been shown to increase the sebum production in the skin, while periods of balance significantly decrease sebum levels.

Alcohol
Drinking in excess leads to significant skin dehydration and robs the body of vital nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C and the minerals magnesium and zinc.

Smoking
Studies show that smoking reduces the supply of blood to the skin’s surface, restricting the flow of essential nutrients. This leaves the skin dull and grayish in color. Smokers tend to have thinner skin than non-smokers; therefore, their skin is prone to the premature appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Skincare
Proper skincare at the surface layer —cleansing, toning and moisturizing—is important. However, these products cannot penetrate below the skin’s outer layer. To influence change in the skin, a systematic approach must be followed.

Imedeen is skincare in tablet form that works with topical cosmetic regimens of daily creams and lotions. Imedeen penetrates where these cosmetic products cannot—below the surface.

Imedeen™, one of the most advanced skincare supplements available, works from the inside to improve the overall quality of the skin—from head to toe.

Eat Healthy
Today we know how critical nutrition is for our health and well-being, including the quality of our skin. To give your skin what it needs, you must provide your body with the nutrition it requires. This includes eating five portions of fresh fruits and vegetables daily and limiting the intake of sugar, fat and processed foods.

With the pace of today’s lifestyles, it’s becoming increasingly harder to satisfy those nutritional needs. This makes Imedeen anti-aging supplements a wise choice in balancing the needs of the skin for nourishment.

Nourish the Skin
At the end of a busy day, it becomes too easy to skip your skincare routine. For radiant skin, it is important to adopt a skincare regimen that includes cleansing and moisturizing with products suited to your individual skin type.

Protect in the Sun
Feeling the sun’s warm rays on your skin can be quite pleasurable—and unavoidable. Even on a cloudy day, harmful UV-A and UV-B rays can damage the skin. Because the sun is the single most cause of skin aging, it is critical to take proper precautions when exposed to these damaging rays. Using products formulated for your skin type with an appropriate UV-A and UV-B protection factor can help prevent premature aging caused by the sun.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and covers an area of nearly 21 square feet.
The EPIDERMIS is 0.1mm thick and is in itself built up of 15-25 layers of epidermal cells. Their role is to protect the skin against harmful influences from the outside and help maintain natural balance on the inside.

The DERMIS is 1-3mm thick and secures the skin's smoothness, firmness and resilience. It consists of collagen and elastin in a gel-like substance rich in moisture binding polysaccharides. This vital foundation is where Imedeen works.
UV-A rays are always present in daylight. They greatly influence the elements in the dermis and are responsible for approximately 80% of the signs of aging in the skin.

UV-B rays are responsible for a tan or sunburn. They can make the upper skin cells divide faster, causing a leathery surface. This is the skin's own way to protect itself against the sun.

UV-C rays are absorbed by the ozone layer.
